Project MarsWorks are a student-led team with over 20 members at the University of Sheffield who design and build Mars rovers.
About MarsWorks
A student-led project building a Mars Rover for international competition.
We design and develop full-size Mars rovers for international competitions. Our team consists of members from different engineering backgrounds who are given the opportunity to develop their skills outside of lecture theatres.
Whilst studying for a degree, we can get hands on experience building a rover. We are simultaneously learning how the industry operates and expanding our network. Not to mention, we travel internationally to compete with other university teams and learn from their designs!
The Competitions
This year of 2024/2025 we are working hard to design, manufacture, and compete with a new rover in the University Rover Challenge and Anatolian Rover Challenge. Each of the competitions have two main components, technical documentation, and a series of missions:
The technical documentation section involves presenting our design and manufacture process. This is used by the competition panel to select the finalists that will be invited to the competition to compete in the missions.
The missions vary from year to year but involve tasks such as sample collection, autonomous driving, and search and rescue missions.
Our big aspiration this academic year of 2024/2025 is to join the University Rover Challenge set in Utah, USA by the Mars Society! Interestingly, the site is geographically similar to Mars and has a similar chemical composition in its soil. We cannot wait to take up the challenge!
ARC ran for the first time in July 2022, in which we were the only team from the UK to compete! We hope to return and win the challenge for 2025!
